At the beginning of the 19th century, China's attempt to end the lucrative British opium trade resulted in the blockade of Chinese ports by Great Britain, which ended up turning Hong Kong into its own trading colony in 1841. The area, until then land of farmers and fishermen, prospered rapidly.
