Hangzhou,a UNESCO dual-heritage city (West Lake & Grand Canal) and City of Gastronomy, boasts 5,000-year-old Liangzhu civilization. known in the Middle Ages as the earthly paradise, was the magnificent capital of the Southern Song Dynasty between 1138 and 1279. The city flourished, and its virtues were extolled by Marco Polo, who supposedly visited Hangzhou at its peak and described it as “the City of Heaven, the grandest in the world.” When the Mongols established their new capital in Beijing, Hangzhou continued to be a prolific commercial center. Although most of the buildings were destroyed during the Taiping Rebellion, the beautiful West Lake and its surroundings are well worth a visit.
